I love iPhones. I have always enjoyed using them. The cameras have always been mediocre but have had potential.

I recently did a seminar and included a photo that I had taken on my iPhone 6. Most of my photos In that presentation had been taken on high end Nikon gear. I slipped in 2 photos that had been taken on an iPhone into the presentation.

Here is one of them.

This photo was taken in Serre Chavalier, France. It's one of my favourite spots for snow and food.

This photo was taken in pano mode and processed inside the phone. Honestly, I wasn't at all surprised that the audience didn't pick this out as a smart phone shot over a £10k pro gear shot. The photo works incredibly well.

Anyway, back to my title. The iPhone 7 plus does something unique that other iPhones can't. The phone has 2 built in lenses. A telephoto and a wide angle. This, along with some special in camera software does something completely different to other iPhones. It creates Bokeh!

What's bokeh I hear you cry? Well, it's the blurry part of the picture that makes it look 'professional.

Let me show you.

The top photo was taken in the iPhone 7 plus new portrait mode using the new lenses and software. Below is the same photo taken without the dual lenses. I have also added a chrome filter to the top image that adds a bit of punch.

I will let you judge for yourselves which one you like better.

I thought this was going to be a huge gimmick with horrible results. Actually, I have been pleasantly surprised.

Yesterday we went wine tasting so I tried the settings again.

As you can see the fore ground, (the bit that's in focus) is nice and sharp. Everything else is out of focus. It looks nice. It almost looks professional.

Honestly I am mega surprised by the iPhone 7 plus camera capability.

Does it match my pro gear? No where near it. Could I use if for a wedding? No chance. What I can do though is create lovely images when I want to without carrying a massive dslr around with me. It's given me a little creative freedom that has inspired me to use my iPhone a little more on the fly. If I was a wedding guest, I bet I could take some amazingly professional images with it of the small details.

It clearly doesn't ha e the autofocus capability of a dslr, the low iso, or speed but if you have time and enough light, you can create something pretty breath taking.

In my opinion this sets the iPhone 7 plus apart from previous iPhones. If you like technology and you like photograph this is actually a surprising choice.

I am looking forward to more iPhone 7 plus blog posts!!

Wedding clients do not fear. I will not be turning up to photograph your wedding with an iPhone 7 plus..... yet. 👀
